The Braggers

Koby was the smartest boy in his Sunday school class, and everyone knew it--especially Koby! "Did you get all the answers to the questions in today's lesson for a change?" he sneered at Peter before class. "They were so easy I could have done them in my sleep."

Koby wasn't the only one who bragged. After the lesson about Samson, Andrew stood up. "I bet I'm about as strong as Samson," he said, flexing his muscles.

Danielle shrugged and reached into her pocket as Mr. Townsend picked up the basket to collect the offering. "Look what Dad gave me for the offering today," she said, waving a five dollar bill. "I bet none of you has this much to put in." She grinned. "We're rich!" she added proudly.

Mr. Townsend finished taking the offering, and then he set his lesson book aside. "Turn in your Bibles to Jeremiah 9:23 and 24," he said. (See today's Scripture.) "Read those verses silently three times. Ask yourself if your attitude pleases the Lord." The room was quiet while the class read the verses. "Does anybody want to comment on this passage?" asked Mr. Townsend.

"According to this, we're not supposed to brag like some people in this class were doing," said Peter emphatically, looking directly at the kids who had been boasting a few minutes earlier.

"Yeah," agreed Addie. "Andrew shouldn't brag about his strength. And Danielle shouldn't be proud just because her family has a little money."

"And Koby shouldn't brag about getting good grades," declared Blake with a scowl.

"Right!" agreed Tristan. "I'm glad I don't brag like that."

"Whoa! Be sure you're not proud of your humility!" warned Mr. Townsend. Tristan looked a little startled, and Mr. Townsend continued. "We have a few minutes left," he said, "so let's talk about this. Notice that verse twenty-four says we are to 'glory' in that we know the Lord. What do you think that means?"

"We should be happy and thankful that we know God," suggested Addie.

"Yeah, and we shouldn't brag about stuff we have or what we can do," said Peter. Several kids nodded, and after a short discussion, Mr. Townsend led the class in prayer, asking God to help them glory only in knowing Him.

How About You?
Are you proud? Do you brag about what you have or what you can do? It's good to realize that you have the ability to accomplish many things. Thank God for the talents He's given you, and use them to serve Him. Thank Him for other blessings--food, your home, toys, health, and nice clothes. But remember that your strength, keen mind, or riches are from God. They're not due to you. Never brag about them. Glory--gratefully rejoice--only in God and in knowing Him.

Today's Key Verse:
Let him who glories glory in this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the Lord.
(Jeremiah 9:24)

Today's Key Thought:
Don't brag about yourself
