Bennett, 18, was named man of the match for his two-try contribution to Ayr’s Premiership Cup final victory over Ayr last month.

Having been fast-tracked through the Scottish Rugby Union’s elite development programme, he played for the national under-20 side while still just 17 and made his senior Glasgow debut, against Leinster, last weekend.

However, Bennett’s progress had also been tracked by Clermont. Neil McIlroy, the French side’s Scottish team manager, confirmed that the player had been on their radar screen for some time, after his performance last year for the Scotland Under-18 team against Italy – when he scored a hat-trick of tries – had demonstrated his potential to the wider world.

“We also watched him for the Scotland Under-20s against France recently,” said McIlroy. “He was on the back foot most of the time, but he still stuck in.

"That’s good to see. We then invited him over for a few days because it’s important to know what a player is like as a person as well. He made a big impression all-round.”
