No Adultery

"Hey, Marc, did you see that girl lying on the beach back there?" asked Caleb. The boys were on a fishing outing with Marc's dad.

"If you mean the one in the pink bikini, I sure did!" replied Marc.

"Yeah." Caleb snickered. "Let's take a walk over that way pretty soon. Maybe we should . . ."

"Sh-h-h! Here comes Dad," interrupted Marc, blushing deeply.

Marc's father had overheard the boys' conversation, but he didn't say anything immediately. He prayed silently that God would show him how to teach the boys a special lesson. On the way home, he asked, "Boys, do you know the Ten Commandments?"

"Sure!" replied Caleb. He and Marc began to recite them in unison.

When they got to number seven, Dad stopped them. "I can see that you're able to recite them," he said, "but do you understand what they mean? How about the seventh one--the one you just repeated? What do you think it means?"

"Well . . . ah . . . our Sunday school teacher said adultery refers to using our bodies in a wrong way," said Marc. "He said it means we're supposed to have intimate contact only when we get married--and only with the person we marry."

"That's exactly right, Marc," replied his father.

"Our teacher said we should even be careful about all kinds of contact--like hugging and kissing," Caleb added.

Dad nodded. "And Jesus said that if a boy looks at a girl with lust in his heart, it's the same as being intimate with her. To 'lust' means to desire to do things that are a privilege God reserves only for husbands and wives. It's important to ask God to help us keep our minds and bodies pure for Him."

"Well, is it wrong to look at a girl on the beach?" asked Caleb.

"If you can't keep your mind pure and it causes you to desire her in a wrong way, then yes, it's wrong. You need to avoid that source of temptation as well as looking at inappropriate pictures in magazines or on TV," replied Dad. "Always remember and respect God's command regarding this."

How About You?
Did you know that God wants you to stay pure and save your body for the person you will marry some day? The only time it's right to be intimate with that person is after you are married to him or her. Ask God to help you keep your mind and body pure. Avoid situations or pictures that tempt you to do otherwise. Don't ever break the seventh commandment.
