Something Missing

". . . and please help the people at Westside Mission find enough workers to help serve the Thanksgiving dinner," prayed Sheri a few days before Thanksgiving. She finished and said amen, ending the day's family devotions.

"I've been thinking," said Mom later that evening. "Maybe our family could volunteer to help at Westside Mission this Thanksgiving."

"What!" exclaimed Sheri. "I don't want to spend Thanksgiving there! What about our own turkey dinner?"

"I think we could work that in, too," said Mom. "Let's think about it."

"I am thinking about it," muttered Sheri with a big frown. She stood up. "Mom, since we didn't have dessert for supper tonight, can I make a cake for our snack later this evening?" she asked.

"Can you make one from scratch?" asked Mom. "We don't have any cake mix."

"I can do it," Sheri assured her mother and eagerly set to work. She mixed flour, sugar, and salt. She stirred in eggs, oil, and milk. Finally, she poured the batter into a cake pan and put it in the oven.

When the buzzer sounded to indicate that the cake was done, Sheri took it out. "Mom, my cake is so . . . so flat!" she exclaimed. "It didn't rise!"

Mom came to look. "I think you must have forgotten the baking powder," she said.

"This won't be any good," groaned Sheri.

"No," agreed Mom. She looked thoughtful. "It reminds me a little of you, honey. There's something missing in this cake and also in your attitude." She smiled at the look of surprise on Sheri's face. "You stirred the cake ingredients but didn't mix in the thing that puts action into the batter. And you prayed for helpers at the mission, but you're not willing to mix actions with the words you spoke," Mom explained.

Sheri was startled. "I didn't think about that," she said.

"Give it some more thought," suggested Mom, giving Sheri a hug. "The Bible says faith without action to back it up is as useless as this flat, inedible cake."

On Thanksgiving morning, Sheri jumped out of bed. At first I didn't want to go help at the mission, but now I'm glad we're going, she thought. I'm thankful for all God has done for me, so I don't want to be like that cake I made a few days ago.

How About You?
How thankful are you for God's blessings in your life?Thankful enough to let Him use your hands and feet to show His love? Maybe you don't have the opportunity of helping at a mission, but what about helping at home? What about being friendly and kind to a new student? What about witnessing to a friend?Don't just say you love God; show it. Enjoy this Thanksgiving Day, and look for opportunities to show your faith in God by pleasing Him in the way you act each and every day.
