Too Late

"I heard they'll let us feed the giraffes at the zoo, Mom! Can Itake money along in case I have to buy the food to feed them? Sometimes they have camel rides, too! Did you ever ride a camel?" Silas couldn't sit still. His scout troop was taking a trip to the zoo, and he couldn't wait to go. He bounced from one spot in the kitchen to another while he peppered his mother with questions. Finally, Silas just couldn't stay in the house any longer. "Can I wait outside?" he asked.

"Sure," agreed Mom, "but there's not much time. I'll take you to meet the others in just a few minutes, so be ready to go as soon as I come out."

Outdoors, Silas heard shouting and cheering coming from an empty lot down the street. What's going on? he wondered, and he went to find out. Several boys from the neighborhood were playing baseball, and one had just hit a home run. Then another made a double play. Silas stayed to watch.

Finally, Silas remembered Mom's warning to be ready to leave, and he hurried home. "When are we going, Mom?" he asked as ran into the house.

"We're not. You weren't ready when I came out," replied Mom. "I called and honked the horn. Mr. James finally came over and said he'd seen you head for the ball game. By then, it was already too late."

"But I want to go to the zoo," wailed Silas.

"I'm sorry, but it's too late now," said Mom. "I warned you, honey."

During family devotions that evening, Dad read from the book of Matthew (see today's Scripture). "These verses remind me of you, Silas," said Mom. "You heard my warning, but you weren't ready when I came out, so you missed the trip to the zoo. The people described here were so busy with their own interests that they missed something, too."

"Yes," said Dad. "Bible scholars believe Noah warned the people that judgment was coming. They must have heard him, but they probably thought they'd be fine. They didn't repent and weren't ready when the flood came. It's a reminder for us to be ready for something special, too. We need trust in Jesus as Savior and be ready when He comes to take His children to be with Him in heaven."

Silas nodded. "Missing heaven would be a lot worse than missing the zoo!" he said soberly.

How About You?
Are you ready for Jesus' return? Do you know what you need to do to be ready for that event? Do you think you're ready because you go to church and Sunday school or do all sorts of good things? None of those activities prepare you for heaven. The Bible says that the only way to be ready is by accepting Jesus into your heart and life. Believe what God says and put your faith in Jesus now before it's too late. (See the ABCs of Salvation at the right.)
